The Department of Statistics was established in 1949 as the Department of Public Administration of Taiwan Regional College of Administration. In the past fifty years, the Department has undergone different stages of development and became as the Department of Statistics, National Taipei University in 2001. As of 2005, The Department has more than 600 students and contains four programs including undergraduate program, master program, undergraduate program at extension education, and master program at extension education. The Department is now located at the new Business School building on San Shia campus which provides the Department a space of continuous growth and development.
 

本系一本為國家培育行政幹部的一貫目的,並配合科技與經濟進步,培育國家建設與經濟發展所需之統計專業人才。設立宗旨:培養優秀之統計專業人才,培養學生跨領域之專業核心能力。
教育目標:

 

  1. 學士班:訓練學生統計專業能力,以促進產業及學術之發展。
  2. 碩士班:強化學生統計理論與實務之專業能力,培養進階統計人才。
  3. 碩職班:訓練在職人士統計分析方法,提高職場工作績效。
 

Many alumni of the Department established themselves in academia, business, government, and other fields. All faculties and staffs exert themselves to pursue excellence and innovation in every aspect. In compliance with the high demand of work market, we integrate diversified specialty of our faculty to scheme sets of elective courses, raise teaching quality and build a high grade learning environment for students to foster statistical professionals. We periodically hold conference and workshop to promote academia exchange with industry, government and academia. We promote the application and development of statistical methodology in all areas. We incorporate alumni association, hold alumni activities and strengthen connections between alumni and students. We also popularize Professional Certification in Statistics that provides a standard for industries, universities or research institutes to evaluate subjects’ professional proficiency in basic statistics and analytical ability.

 

The department cultivates students' basic literacy based on the educational goals, so that they can become excellent citizens with "life adaptation and future learning, humanistic literacy and professional ethics, civic qualifications and social service abilities". The core abilities that students of each school system should have are as follows: Bachelor's degree: Possess the ability to further study, obtain certificates and obtain employment in statistics, finance and business-related fields. Have the ability to process data, use information, think independently, and solve problems to improve workplace competitiveness. Master's class: Possess complete and Dashi statistics-related knowledge to enable the ability to become the analysis and management personnel in the middle and high-level statistical departments of the government and enterprises. Possess the ability to further study, obtain certificates and obtain employment in statistics, finance and business-related fields. The students are specialized in learning and have the competitiveness in the workplace. Master's on-the-job special class: Have the ability to apply statistical analysis methods to the workplace to improve work quality and performance.

  Because of the wide application of statistics, students who graduated from the Department of Statistics also have diverse and broad employment opportunities. In the past, our graduates mainly entered government agencies as statisticians. In recent years, they have entered the financial and insurance industries to account for the largest proportion. The industrial and commercial industry is second, and most of them work in the information or research department. A considerable proportion also enters market research and marketing and other emerging industry services. Those with a master's degree or above can enter medical research institutions as statisticians. Because the courses of this department cover the core courses of information science, there have always been graduates entering the computer information industry. Because the students in this department have solid mathematics training, there are also some students who have served as teachers of mathematics in junior high schools after completing the education program.

 

 

The Department of Statistics will put efforts in the following areas:

  2. Offering statistical training for corporations and organizations to enhance their professional and technical level.
  3. Establishing statistical center to provide consultations for statistical related issues.
  4. Joining large-scale research projects to raise research level.
  5. Enhancing cooperation among academic, industry and government; fostering professionals in occupational settings.
  6. Promoting Professional Certification in Statistics that provides a standard to evaluate professional proficiency.
 

Department Library
Most of the statistics related books, journals and data bases are collected in the main library of the university and the library at Business School. The department library also has a collection of over 300 books, and master theses of our Department graduates.

Computers and Resources
The Department offers a computer room for students in which there are 34 PCs, a laser printer, a scanner, and a burner. The Department also provides statistical and mathematical computer software including SAS, SPSS, Mathematica, Minitab, WinRATS-32 (including CATS), S-PLUS, JMP, Statistica (Data Miner), Matlab/Statistics toolbox (network version 50 users), and many others.
